The primary objective of this project was to create a smart application that can manage the health-related concerns of users. The purpose of the project was to help people keep track of their health concerns, enable remote sharing and reporting of patients’ health records by healthcare professionals and facilitate medication management. The goal was to develop technology that can provide solutions like live video consultation, health activity tracking along with healthcare data security. The terminal goal of the project was to integrate the app into wearable services with multi-device support functionality.
The client wanted to develop software that can aid doctors in providing better health care services to their patients. The software must be able to help doctors assist with patient information access, accurate diagnosis, and provide medical charting, testing, decision-making, and treatment. The requirement emerged to substitute the paper-based record-keeping system with electronic medical records, which has proven to be more effective.
The challenges our team faced while developing the application are as follows:
The software we developed needs to be adaptable to the hardware that clinics or hospitals are using. Implementing the fundamentals required for the smooth operation of software can be a challenge in itself. The institutions might not have the hardware needed to set up the EMR solution and before developing software we had to figure out the technical soundness of the hardware.
The attempt to convert paper-based records to digital records is a logistical challenge in itself. It has to deal with numerous documentations detailing the medical histories of many patients, making data input a laborious and time-consuming operation for the staff. Transferring the data which is recorded in a paper format in the old system is one of the primary EMR adoption challenges.
Data privacy and protection are a big challenge for the EMR software development. It was challenging for our team as we had to build a system that could not only store big data but also provide security for the data from any technical disaster or a cyberattack. HIPAA and HITECH compliance was brought into consideration to overcome this challenge.
The physicians and specialists (if involved any, this applies for special case medical diagnoses) can access the patient's clinical EMR dashboards. The details like: Laboratory results, chronic drugs, vital signs, and preventative plans will all be displayed on one screen in a physician's patient-centric view.
The patient portal provides login options for patients so they can access data on their medical history, the number of doctor visits, and lab reports. The purpose of this feature is to promote the active involvement and responsibility of patients’ healthcare to increase their engagement.
The prescriptions can be easily printed and sent electronically to the patient's preferred pharmacy. The patients can also get Automated alerts about interactions with pharmacies, including dosages, allergies, and prescriptions, this feature will help the user to be up-to—date with their health records and potentially never miss important follow-ups and prescriptions.
Real-time digital charts for patients' diagnoses and medical conditions can be made. The single chart which contains all the information and every detailed data of the patient form their records is also stored. The software can provide the hospital with notes and information that was gathered by and for the clinicians about the patients. The chart can be used for diagnosis and treatment.
The patient can get automated notifications, once they start using the EMR system, they will be notified with the notifications for their next follow-ups, the diagnosis, and prescriptions they received in the last follow-up for reference. This feature is there to help the patient receive updates on their important date and medical details.
Patients can use their mobile or tablet to fill up enrollment forms and sign in. The registration or the enrollment paperwork can be filled in after being welcomed by a personalized welcome message. The solution pre-populates the electronic registration forms with the patient data already present in the electronic patient record, such as date of birth, address, phone number, or insurance information, through a smooth interaction with the EMR. Patients just need to find data that hasn't been entered.
The Resultant system made the work of Hospital, doctor and patient easier with data entry and record management.
